What Changes Between Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 Cities?

Recently, we went on a trip to South India, and during that time, we went to two cities, Tuticorin and Bangalore. Bangalore being a tier 1 city, Tuticorin being a 3rd tier city, and the city where I currently live, Chandigarh being a second tier city, I can tell a little bit about all three of these cities. First of all, let’s start off with the highest tiered city out of all of them, Bangalore. Because of my aunt living there, I have spent a little bit of time in Bangalore. The first thing that you will notice is what everybody complains about, which is the traffic. Which makes sense, as it is one of the most populated cities in India.

But two more things that you will notice are the job opportunities and the industries. Bangalore is often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India, having many large companies based out of Bangalore. Companies like Swiggy and Infosys were founded in Bangalore, and big companies like IBM, Dell, and Accenture also have offices in Bangalore.

Another thing that you will notice is the cost of living. I’m not just talking about things like food that exist everywhere, but things like rent, which can become extremely expensive if you get it in a prime area. Even a 1 BHK in Indiranagar can cost 25k to 35k per month, which is not cheap for a 1 BHK.

Now, moving onto the tier 3 city, which is Tuticorin, I have been to Tuticorin many times, but recently I’ve seen lots of improvement. One of the main things you will notice is that you won’t find much traffic, and you also won’t find many big or tall buildings. The roads, as far as I have seen in Tuticorin, are really good, but some of them are still under construction. One thing that might affect people that come here is that you won’t find any 5 star hotels. You can stay at a few 3 star hotels that are good, and great value for money, but if you really need to stay at a 5 star hotel, that won’t be possible. However, it is growing extremely quickly. Now, there’s a VinFast factory that has opened up, and Tuticorin is one of the major ports in India, especially for Sri Lanka and Maldives. Not to mention, the new Tuticorin airport terminal is much bigger than the last terminal, and it should start to have more routes in the future.

Now moving onto Chandigarh, the place where I live. In a way, Chandigarh feels like the sweet spot between tier 1 cities like Bangalore, and tier 3 cities like Tuticorin. Because in Chandigarh, you can find great restaurants, and you can find good infrastructure as well. You also won’t find too much traffic here compared to bigger cities. Chandigarh is a well developed city, and was in fact the first planned city of India. You may not find extremely big companies like IBM and Dell in Chandigarh, but you can still find good job opportunities here.

Anyway, that’s it for this post, see you all next time!
