Learning Beyond the Guitar

Sameer sir has been my music teacher for about one year now, and he has been teaching my brother guitar for about two years now. After we started learning from him, we started to see some real growth in playing the guitar. In fact, it was after his advice that I even moved to the guitar. Before that, I just used to play the ukulele.

Recently, we went to our music teacher’s house. Not to take a guitar or music lesson, but simply to spend time with him. It reminded us that learning does not just happen through books or instruments, but through a connection with the one who is teaching you.

They had invited us at 7:00, and we found it hard to navigate through the small streets and find a parking spot, though we still managed to arrive on time. Right after we arrived, we started talking. A little later, Ianna came out of their room, and my brother and I started talking to her. It turns out that she also had many interests that we had as well. She had also watched Harry Potter, which my brother and I have a keen interest in.

We talked to her for about 10 to 15 minutes. They also served us some black coffee and snacks, which were both great. Soon, we started playing games. First, we played a spy game. Everybody had a piece of paper with 16 words on a list. One person would have a list, but the order would be jumbled and the list would not have any numbers. We had to ask questions and figure out who the imposter in the game was.

The game started, and the questions began. I was actually quite suspicious of my brother at first, and in the first round of voting, I voted for him. However, most people voted for Jessie Didi, but it turned out that it was not her. I was still suspicious of my brother, but after my father pointed it out, I began suspecting my music teacher himself. When the time came, I voted for him, and he turned out to be the imposter.

In the second game, I was suspicious of almost everyone because I was not sure who it was. As the questions went on, I did not really know who to vote for, so I voted for my brother. It turned out that it was my father.

After that, we played a really fun game of riddles. They were all biblical, and for all of them, you needed deep knowledge of the Bible. My brother got a few, and my father got a few as well. I sadly got none. My favourite riddle was stolen, torn, and something that was mourned, and the answer was Joseph’s cloak.

Then came my time to shine, which was teasers and dad jokes. There were one or two jokes that I could not get, but I was able to get most of them. Later, I was even able to make some of my own jokes. Overall, I really enjoyed this part.

Then came dinner. There was a huge variety of food. There was poori, aloo for the poori, chicken, dal, and rice. I had never seen chicken prepared this way before, but it turned out to be my favourite dish. I also had some rice along with dal. During this time, we were discussing many things, including church. In the end, I had more poori and aloo. All of the food tasted great in my opinion.

After dinner, they showed us their photo albums. We played a little bit of Monopoly with Ianna, and then I got a chance to play the electric guitar. It was getting quite late, but I did not really care because of the guitar. I played many songs, like Nirvana, Johnny B. Goode, and Beyond Belief.

I then gave the guitar to my brother so he could play as well. He played and improvised a few worship songs on the electric guitar. After that, my mother played the piano for a bit, and then we said one final prayer, took photos, and went home.

Overall, it was a great experience meeting them, not just for a lesson, but to build a bond.
That is it for this post. See you guys next week.
